The South African-born, Australian-raised Dena Amy is a chameleon of the arts; an accomplished DJ, singer, producer, dancer and actress. Having spent the past few years writing, recording and touring across North American, Dena has recently relocated from Los Angeles to Sydney to continue her journey and accolade as one of Australia’s most important new electronic artists.
Inspired by her homeland and the great Nelson Mandela, Dena’s tribal club hit ‘Jol’ [for prominent dance imprint Sweat It Out] was a celebration of hope and happiness, and received international support from Black Coffee, Claptone, Horse Meat Disco, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Nora en Pure, Roger Sanchez, Danny Tenaglia, Mark Knight and Purple Disco Machine to name a few. On ‘Your Eyes’ [Stoney Roads Records], Dena combined her beautiful emotive vocals to the brooding bliss-house production of London Topaz to devasting affect, whilst ‘Wait For You’ [WM Music] hit harder in the club, with Dena’s delicate vocals soaring over the deep, thumping bass. Dena returned to Sweat It Out for her collaboration with Kyle Watson on ‘Weaker’, her soft layered vocals complimenting the wubbing synths of this darker house track.
In 2016, RÜFÜS DU SOL released ‘Hypnotised’ feat. Dena Amy, taken from their acclaimed second album ‘Bloom’. Dena supported RÜFÜS DU SOL as a DJ across their extensive North America album tour, performing the song live at iconic venues including New York’s Terminal 5 and Colorado’s Red Rocks. The RDS tour followed another major North American run for Dena, where she jumped on main support for Hayden James’ ‘Just A Lover’ tour, plus joined him on stage to perform ‘Something About You’. Closer to home, Dena toured with London electronic artist Tourist in early 2019.
Since breaking onto the scene a few years ago, Dena has stockpiled a seriously impressive list of festival and club plays both here in Australia and the United States. On this side of the Pacific Dena has wooed crowds from Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, Field Day and FOMO, to Harbourlife, Beyond The Valley, Spilt Milk, For The Love and Snowtunes. In the U.S Dena has played at Coachella, EDC Las Vegas, CRSSD Festival, Electric Forest and a number of exclusive RÜFÜS DU SOL & Friends events. Plus, she’s sailed international waters with Holy Ship [dropping a b2b set with Louisahhh and Sita Abellan] and returns to Fiji’s Your Paradise in 2019 for a second idyllic year in a row. Dena has recorded a live stream mix for Mixmag’s global series and late last year was handpicked by the dance music bible for a creative-focused writing camp in New York together with Little Boots, Kidnap and Moon Boots. Around the traps Dena has shared the stage with The Black Madonna, Bob Moses, Rampue, Gerd Jansen, Denis Sulta, Green Velvet, Kaytranada, Yotto, Palms Trax, Patrick Topping, Fisher, MK, The Blaze and Duke Dumont amongst others.
From South African street parties to LA rooftops, Sydney sunsets and sweaty Berlin warehouse raves, Dena’s musical palette is rich and well refined. Her desire to represent a visual motion of movement and expression through dance – whether in the literal sense or through the speakers is her main driving force, and she is excited to share a wave of new music over the coming 12 months.
To put it another way, Dena Amy is only just getting started.
